Hi -- My name is Christine Abraham. I am a singer/dancer. While on the national tour of MY FAIR LADY, I tore my ACL and meniscus during a rehearsal. I of course didn't think that I had done that much damage (I have never had a severe injury before)and did the show that night. By Act II, I could hardly walk. I never did the show again. I had surgery on Jan 11th in NYC with a wonderful Dr. who deals with dancers all the time. He is pretty convinced that I had damaged the ACL with other injuries while skiing in the late 80's and another dance injury in the 90's. Basically, I was a walking time bomb. It was going to go, it was just a matter of time. The surgery was very successful . . .we did a patella graft and the meniscus was stitched together and it very strong. I am 32 years old and at the time of the injury, in very good shape. I continued to work out (per Dr.'s orders) at the gym the weeks before my surgery. I am now in PT, very basic right now and my rehab is all ballet based which is wonderful. I am very diligent about my rehab b/c I refuse to not be back in the same if not better shape presurgery. The prognosis is about 8-9 months to continue dancing at the Bway level. :( Can't go back to soon.
What would have been helpful before surgery to know was how immobile I was going to be. That going to the bathroom the 1rst few days after surgery was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I wasn't prepared for that. I am thankful to have found this website and am enjoying reading everyone's profiles etc. It's comforting to know how many of us are out there.
