I'm a 33 year old living near Boston, MA.
I was playing soccer last Thursday, and my knee gave out while I was moving forward and turning hard to the left. I was wearing cleats, and I think my foot was planted firmly, but I'm not sure. I heard 3 distinct pops and collapsed to the ground. Apparently it was loud since my teammates heard it halfway across the field.
Time seemed to slow down when it happened, but it didn't start to hurt until later that day, and even then not too much except for occasional twinges. It swelled up some, but not too much.
After a few minutes I was able to walk again, but my knee felt really unstable and seemed to 'almost' give out twice more.
I've sprained the same knee twice before (15 years ago skiing and 6 years ago playing ice hockey), and both of those times it swelled up and hurt a lot more and I couldn't walk for at least a week.
I had my ACL reconstructed 30 days after the injury using a tibial tendon allograph. The OS also trimmed the medial meniscus because it appeared quite shredded.
Now I'm 11 weeks post-op and doing well with my PT, not having any real problems except an occasional twinge.
That's my story!
