im 27 years old and work as a firefighter in florida. i have been active all my life...a swimmer in highschool, played ultimate frisbee 3 or 4 times a week in college, jogging a twice a week, ect. and have never had any problems whatsoever with my knees up until January this year. i was playing flag football (first game of the season) and while running full speed straight at my opponent, to grab his flag, i hyperextended my leg when coming down on it. its a familiar story...i felt and heard a few pops in my right knee and down to my right ankle and immediately fell to the ground. the pain subsided for a bit and i thought everything was fine. but it came back and progressively got worse throughout the night. went to the doctor and was told i completely tore my ACL. had surgery a week and a half later with the patellar tendon auto graft.
im not gonna lie...its been a rough recovery. lots of pain around the harvest site for quite sometime. i still have alittle pain and im 6.5 months out. overall, though, my knee feels decent and stable. im sure in a few months im not going to notice any pain or discomfort.
this is a great site to get advice and encouragement with our bumm knees.
