June 14, 2005 I was doing a typical multi-attacker drill in my gym. I was kicking with my right foot, left foot planted. As I kicked one student a second student shoved me from the side. When I got shoved my left knee popped, I felt the bone shift to the inside and I dropped. I waited for a shooting pain but nothing really happened. I hobbled over to a chair, there was a bit of swelling but not much pain. I wrapped the knee with an ace bandage and went over to the heavy bag to try it out. After a couple of straight punches I tried to throw a left hook, which requires pivoting on my left knee, and found myself back on my butt. That's when I knew something was wrong.
Final diagnoses was acl torn, grade 2 mcl tear. My OS required that I wait six weeks for the mcl to heal before he would do the acl reconstruction, which I later learned is typical. My surgery is scheduled for August 8, 2005.
I am fearful that even after the procedure my knee will not be the same. I am also nervous that I will not be able to participate in my sport, Krav Maga, because it is high contact and requires heavy pivoting. I miss it.
I had my surgery on August 8 and am now three weeks post-op. Surgery went well and I am now plugging away at physical therapy.
