best knee brace for protection during football

My son is a junior in high school and is an offensive lineman for a large competitive high school football team in Texas. He is 6'3" 270 lbs. He injured his left knee in 8th and 9th grade and both resolved themselves. This year he damaged a plica which was recently removed with no complications. He would like to play football in college. HIs OS wants him to wear functional braces during practice and games from now on.

His OS wants him to get the CTi OTS. I am interested in hearing more about braces as I know very little about them. Our insurance will likely not cover the cost for prophylactic bracing. Please bombard me with information--I want to make an informed decision.
