I have gotten some emails asking me to expand on my response. The traditional plan has been to take such a kid out of sports. This doesn't go over very well with anyone.
The long term results of the kiddie ACL operation that uses expendable autogenous tissues, and doesn't drill through the growth plates has been available for several years. The principal proponent of this operaton is Dr. Michele of Boston.
The even better news is that this nonanatomical repair appears to tolerate the test of time and having to convert this procedure to the ordinary adult procedure of your choice is only necessary in a few percent of cases. The recovery time is six months before sports can be resumed. Dr. Michele typically reccommends a sports brace afterward, but few of my patients have used it, and without ill effects.
Now having done about 50 of these cases, I have have personal experience that it works well.
Good luck to this little guy.
