I agree with Dr. Mark. Go see Dr. Micheli at Boston Children's Hospital. It is my understanding, after several years of researching this exact situation for my son, that Dr. Micheli is the "guru" of acl reconstructions in adolescents. My son had the reconstructive technique using the iliotibial band that Dr. Micheli does, but ours was done by Dr. Kevin Latz at Children's Mercy in Kansas City. He learned the procedure while doing a fellowship under Dr. Micheli in Boston. My son is one year post-op and doing very well. I found out about the procedure through this message board. Since then, I've been in contact with several other families with similar situations. All the ones that I know who have used Dr. Micheli's technique are doing well. There's always a chance that the graft will stretch out over time, be retorn as a result of another injury, or just simply fail, but there are never any guarantee's, even with the adult reconstructive technique. I figured that even temporary stabilization of the knee would be desired over going any longer with an unstable knee, trying to restrict my son's activities, and risking further, more permanent damage.
Good luck!
