My son was 10 at the time of the original injury. After meeting with the Kansas City doctor the first time, he was really treating surgery as a last resort. He wanted to try rehabbing the leg, fitting my son with a custom brace, and see if he is able to return to sports. We did that. He got approx. 1-1 1/2 years down the road with only a couple "giving way" episodes. But then those episodes became more frequent and his knee became more and more unstable, so the doctor and we decided to revisit the surgery option. Each time the knee gives way, more damage can be done to other ligaments, the meniscus, bones, etc. So by the time we finally did the surgery, my son was 13. I definately think that your family is on the right path. If they do end up having the surgery done, it is important for them and their son to understand the importance of the rehab. The muscles in his leg (quad, hamstring, etc.) will start to deteriorate quickly. Those all have to be built back up through rehab. It was a long hard 6 months for our son, but he was a real trooper! Good luck!
