I'm about 5.5 weeks post op. with a patella graft. My doc told me the most important thing before surgery was to get my ROM back and work through any scar tissue from the tear. And keeping or making your leg muscles strong is VERY important before surgery, because after the surgery they all shut down, and you have to work on reconnecting them again afterwords. I rode the bike for about 40 minutes a day to keep my muscles strong and worked hard at regaining my ROM (I'm originally pretty hyper flexible) pre-surgery. I was pretty active before surgery (skiing, hiking, backpacking) like yourself, and I found my muscles working the crutches to be the least of my worries. For as long as you have to use them, your knee will be sore way before your arms. Just make sure your hands are taking your weight on the crutches, NOT your armpits.
