I also had ACL reconstruction exactly 3 weeks ago using the hamstring. I'm 30 years old. My OS does both hamstring and patella and he recommended hamstring for me and told me that on the day of the surgery if I wanted to change my mind and do patella he will have no problem with that. He told me that the way he makes his recommendation is such that for younger patients such as kids who are ~10-25 years old he recommends patella so that the pain/recovery is a bit difficult and hence they will really take his advise and not return to sports until after 6 months (due to the pain after surgery and slightly longer time that it takes to regain ROM). For slightly older patients like myself who are ~25-35 he recommends hamstring because eventhough the pain is less and that you can regain ROM generally earlier than if patella was used, the older more mature patients listen to the doctors advise anyway and not return to sports in less than 6 months.
I'm not saying his methods/advice is right or wrong but would like to get some feedback on the way he makes these recommendations. If you need more information about the OS he can be found here: http://www.dallasorthocenter.com/montgomery.html
After 3 weeks, I have regained most of my ROM except being able to do a full squat. Still working on that. Pain has subsided for the most part compared to what I went through during the first 3 days after the surgery.
I have started going back to the gym and riding the bike and would like to move to the elliptical machine soon and maybe a stairmaster after that. However, I'm concerned about not pushing it too much. Will I be safe as long as I stick to machines where your feet never leaves the ground? (ex: stationary bike, elliptical, stairmaster). How fast would be considered too fast during this early period of recovery?
Thanks!!
