torn MCL - hit by car

On Feb 22, 2008, while walking, a car struck me. (No less than an Escalade, which then fled.)

Diagnosis from both physical exam and MRI: torn MCL.

I was NOT planted and didn't see it coming, so I probably just toppled over ... meaning relaxed state might have prevented more serious injury. Couldn't have been going TOO fast (though witnesses shocked I escaped with no internal damage).

I used crutches for just over a wk full time, then switched to crutches outside walking inside. Also using hinged brace (from day 4 - ER gave me immobolizer, much more knowledgeable dr gave me hinged brace set at 90 degrees pre-MRI, followed w/slightly smaller hinged brace that bends fully post MRI).

I start phys therapy next week (Wed.)

questions:
everyone keeps saying stationary bike - what is adv of that vs actual bike? just wondering if it would be safe to try a v. short v. easy ride on my bike, prior to getting access to stationary bike at PT.
I live in NYC, so daily living requires a fair amt of walking ... should I try to limit walking to speed recovery, or do you think walking at moderate pace is fine? (I don't intend to go out for an hr power walk or anything like that.)
should i still be sleeping in brace? I did from accident (2/22) through 3/11, but much more comfortable to sleep w/o it.

I have read some impressive responses, so hoping someone can give some input. I did NOT bring my usual list of ?s to last dr visit and not seeing him again for another 5 wks, plus couldn't get a PT appt until next week.
