Donald,

Did not want you to be left with no responses - I only had one ACL reconstruction and before that it was surgery for a cartilage tear and finding out that my ACL was 50% torn. Wore sports brace for 8 years and then went the ACL reconstruction route.

My experience the second time around (not for an ACL reconstruction but for knee surgery) was that while no one wants to go for surgery, you have been there before and so you know what to expect. Some things may change in the hospital procedure but then again it may be very similar. As far as if a another reconstruction is necessary and then speeding the recovery process.....in my case, I was less concerned with the speedy recovery and more concerned with avoiding setbacks. I was prepared for the long haul. I had no plans to enter Olympic Events in 4 months but what I did do with a friend was to set a goal far enough in the future that I could work my recovery/muscle strength/sports release with the goal in mind and yet not feel that I had to rush the process. My friend (who coincidentally had an ACL reconstruction one week after me) and I started to loo for adventure vacations. Our spouses gave the okay and so it was going to be like one of those "City Slicker" type events. We wound up signing up for a bike ride w/hiking first riding to Bryce Canyon and then to Grand Canyon North Face and then to Zion Natl Park. We also dragged another friend along with us but he was the healthy one. He could not keep up with us. We did the trip when we were at 8 mos post-op. Here's a photo of me at Bryce Canyon. Believe if you stick that link in your browser, it will take you to the photo.
