It's been a while but I used to hang out here a lot postop.
Here's my story:
Tore my ACL 3 years ago (along with a sprained MCL and torn lateral meniscus) while skiing. Had auto-patellar reconstruction 6 months later after regaining ROM. Pretty normal postop course with physical therapy, quickly regaining full ROM and yes, equal extension to the healthy leg. Had one episode of patellar tendonitis that slowed me down a little, but nothing major.
About a year later, I'm back to the gym, doing everything I want, no restrictions. Starting getting minor pain in the patellar tendon area which I ignored and fought through. After 6 months of it getting worse I went back to my orthopod. He restarted me in PT, antiinflammatories, and take a break from hard core exercising. The pain didn't get better, I hated taking the NSAIDs (didn't work and gave me an upset stomach) and felt miserable. Finally did a repeat MRI which came back negative. Perfect. Healthy.
Only problem is - I still get the pain, intermittently. Sometimes after a long day on my feet at work, I'll have pretty bad pain and can't sleep at night, and other times the pain just creeps up during a quiet lazy day. I'm not participating in any athletic activities right now, just quad sets and walking.
Dr Mark - any thoughts?
Just focus on strengthening exercises? Ignore the pain...?
