Mitch,

Most cannot play competitve sports without an ACL. It is the exception, those that because of their knee configuration and having full muscle strength may be able to do some things that would cause others to have knee instability but they can get by without it with the muscles as the first line of stability and not having to rely on the ACL for the rest of it. I think regardless of what the OS can tell in his office or from any MRI, this is more or less a wait and see how it goes type of thing. The danger is that if it turns out that a certain move that is side to side , twisting or hyperextending causes knee instability, the knee internals will take the abuse and that usually means addl wear or addl tears to the cartilage. We all have just so much cartilage and some tears will create discomfort requiring arthroscopy for them alone to remove the part that may stick out causing irritation to what would normally be a frictionless knee movement. We all have just so much cartilage and once it is gone, it is gone. No one wants to go down the path of having to check out the technigues for grwoing more cartilage if that is even possible.

Some of those that i have come across that have no ACL fall into two categories. Those that curtailed just about all sports or active mobility and pretty much can just do normal daily stuff involving walking, usually biking and sometimes short jogging but can feel some instability and so usually do not do jogging. then there are others that can do jogging and some active sports - more intense biking, etc. But when it comes to sports that involve cutting and twisitng, etc then they usually do not do those things. Maybe there are some that do go back to football, etc but none that i have come across...then again, i do not hang around a locker room and interview these people as to what their knee situation is and what they actually can or cannot do. So...I have limited info.

You are basically left to independent ops and see how it goes....or go get the reconstruction.

I am starting to lose track have how many years it has now been since my reconstruction...believe it is now 9+ years and knee is great ! JUst like the other one ! (and that one has no injury)
