ACL and Public Transportation

I had my ACL surgery on Friday (with micro-fracture on non-weight baring surface) and am non-weight baring for two weeks. I feel great (only taking motrin for minimal pain), but I'm bored out of my mind sitting in my apt. all day. I live in NYC (so no one has a car). I can get in a cab to get places, but it's expensive to do all the time. How long before you were able to get on a bus or subway? Any other tips for getting around in a big city?
