I can't think of one high level player who's succeed without an ACL. The last I know of to seriously consider it was Robert Pires, who didn't want to miss the 2002 World Cup. In the end he skipped the WC and got sliced.
Very few play at that level, and more than a few folks manage to get by without. But you trash your meniscus, it's gone. ACL rebuilds are no big deal. But you are out for a while.
