A short story that may help you and others. I have bad ACL right and left leg, menicus tear right also. Saw surgeon 2 to 3 years ago drained knee 5 times in 6 months. I was sent by this surgeon to see another one that handled 2 Olympic teams knees.
He prescribed brace, ice for 2 weeks and that's it, no surgery. 2 years go by I'm doing great, don't fall down anymore and and no pain. He didn't want to operate why I have no idea, no health problems, he just isn't a surgery happy M.D.Anyway I hopped off curb 2 weeks ago hyper extended right knee cartilage pops swelling, excruciating pain the same old drill. Of course on weekend 3 days to see Dr. My Knee looked like softball, he gave me 4 options, take 1 medipack for 1 week of weak steroids, needle and drain with cortisone(ouch), ice come back 2 weeks then needle (ouch) again, or scope. You got it I opted for pills. 12 hours after 3 doses of pills, woke up, no swelling, no pain, like nothing ever happened. Now he told me this would happen of course I didn't believe it. Everybody always went to the needle first and never prescribed this.
He stated that there is a 75% chance won't flare up again unless I did something to it. Anyway I was amazed, at least a dozen people I work with have bad knees and repaired by surgery or are damaged and they where never given anything but pain pills and the"needle" to drain. I guess you might see another surgeon and you might get some relief. I'm not advocating anything but it seems like you need more options. Hope you do better.
