I played one football game (our league championship) without an ACL and didn't do any further harm, but I was QB, and the play calling was controlled to keep me in the pocket and protect me from a lot of cutting. It was still uncomfortable as all get up. I played college football too, and played with a few guys who finished seasons on torn ACL's. It can be done, but those guys were college football players with daily medical treatment, physical therapy, and evaluation. For an example of how it doesn't work, look at Dennis Dixon from Oregon last year. It was hard to watch him crumple to the ground in pain from a noncontact play last year...you guessed it playing with a brace for his already torn ACL.

If you doc says you can go do it, then listen to him and not a bunch of internet posters. However, there is a lot of experience out there that says it could end up causing meniscus tears, and I can tell you from personal experience, my torn ACL healed perfectly, but my meniscus tears have been rough and required multiple surgeries.
