In Response To: is brace really necessary? (mitch)

Mitch, what is your level of play? High school, college, club? Does your team have a training staff? What do they say?

It's pretty apparent, as others have pointed out, that you have already made up your mind about what you're going to do and are now just looking to find people who will tell you what you want to hear.

Most people on this board are athletes/former athletes who understand the feeling of wanting to do anything possible to find a way to avoid missing playing time. But you need to be realistic with yourself. You have a very severe knee injury, one which will not heal without surgery.

What you are proposing to do is not impossible. You can find examples of athletes who have pulled it off. But for every 1 football player who played a full season on a torn ACL you will find hundreds who tried and failed, or, more likely, wisely chose not to risk further damage to their knee and did not attempt it. Someone pointed out Dennis Dixon . . . QB Oregon Ducks and Elite Major League Baseball prospect. His knee gave out on him on a non-contact cut in the 1st quarter of the 1st game he attempted to play w/ the torn ACL.

Perhaps you are an athlete the caliber of Hines Ward or a genetic freak capable of pulling it off, I don't know. Perhaps, for whatever personal reason, playing this upcoming season is worth the risk to you. That is a decision for you, your doctor, and your training staff to make. But don't get the idea that this is a common move, even for the highest caliber athletes.

Everyone on this board has been through a severe injury of their own, or has treated patients who have. You would be wise to consider their input. Nobody is trying to tell you what to do, just trying to make sure you understand the risks involved.

Good luck.
