In Response To: is brace really necessary? (mitch)

I tore my ACL in '79 playing HS football. No surgery - played HS hockey and football for 2 more years - rec hockey, waterski, raquetball, tennis, softball for more than 20 years without too much difficulty - but did have a few giving way episodes that would take me out of commission for 2 or 3 weeks. That first year after the tear, probably 3 or 4 times, so I missed most of the seasons anyway. Same could happen to you and then you'd wish you had it taken care of.
I'd say sometime in your life when your meniscus is shot, stability is non-existent, and arthritis has set in, you'll get a new ACL put in. At least that's what I did.

Good luck -
