Funny you should ask that. I have been around high level college and professional sports for the past 20 years. I have never heard of a player (just my experience) having an opposite knee autograft. My suspicion is that they don't want to violate a pristine knee to work on a damaged one. I was told that every time the operate on you, you are going to come out worse than a perfect/untouched knee, so why go into a perfect knee when there are alternatives (same knee auto or allo)? Just for an easier/faster rehab? I have seen plenty of same knee autografts fail during my career (never known anyone with an opposite knee), so I'm not sure I buy that justification either. I'm no doc, and I don't research it, but my persoanl experience (2 years college baseball, 2 years professional baseball, watching both my brothers play/coach major division 1 football) has been if you push your knee too far any graft will fail
I'm so thankful that I went forward with my meniscus allograft procedure. The surgery, recovery, and rehab were rough for 6 weeks, but at 4 months I'm riding 120 miles per week on my road bike, lifting weights, and rehabing. I walked 18 holes of golf on my home course without pain two weeks ago (first time for that in 3+ years). Yes, I still get some swelling and stiffness (mostly from being too sedentary at work), but I'm pumped up about my result. If all goes well, I will run a sprint triathlon next year. I must say, I did fit the criteria for the meniscus allograft procedure to a T, but I'm thrilled with my result and doctor. No offense to Dr. Mark who said its a bad idea which yields mostly bad results, and maybe I will have complications down the road (knock on wood), but at 4 months I couldn't expect more. My donor will be riding, runnning, and competing with me, and I'm thankful he filled out the card.
by the way, best of luck to your daughter...she'll be sprinting in no time.
