One concern that would play on my brain if I even considered this method over methods currently used is that if I traveled outside the USA for this procedure, then I return to the USA and if I had any complications...who am I then to go to for troubleshooting ? I am not going to want to go outside the USA again for any assistance and yet, that is where they have the experience with this method. Just from that concern alone, I would not go that route. We are not talking about a life threatening disease that a person exhausted treatments available to them and then sought treatments only administered outside the country and the person being desparate decided to go that route. We are talking simply about a timeframe for getting back to normal and sports activities and my feeling is that is not a good enough reason to then try methods outside of what has already been deemed fairly decent methods here in this country where you have a whole cadre of doctors/OSs that can provide second opiions or follow-up for complications, etc.
I went with a patella autograft reconstruction, It did take 6 months to gain a full sports release. Same with a friend of mine that went thru same ordeal and at same timeframe as my injury. I am now.....almost 10 years since my reconstruction and my knee is "Perfect". No difference from other knee. I would not even know which knee had the reconstruction if it was not for a small line scar only visible to me. Is not that the ultimate goal for any of us ? My friend also has same satisfactory outcome and so have many others. But bear in mind that there are those that have less than 100% satisfactory outcomes and that goes for all reconstruction methods. So...then what do you do if you do not have 100% satisfactory outcome and it's a method outside the USA ? Are you going to make addl trips ? I would save those trips for vactions and not non-life threatening medical procedures.
