Rehab and surgical techniques have come a long way. I was released for sports at 4 months post-op following the auto-hamstring. That said, I had to build my hamstring muscle which took longer. With my patellar, it would have been 4 months without any issues IF I had been on the same rehab program as my auto-hamstring.
LARS sounds promising but at this point, you're a guinea pig...there's no long term results. Like a cadaver, it's a foreign substance in the knee and no 10 year results.
Good surgery with a proven type of graft and good rehab will result in no long term issues.
If he's that good of a kicker, there's no reason he couldn't go to the college of his choice, get an invitation to training camp and walk-on.
