I did not have the hamstring - I had allograft - and I am in the United States, but I'll share my experience with you anyway.
I have 4 tiny (1 cm) scars - two on each side of my kneecap, one just below it, and one on the inner part of my thigh about 3 inches above my kneecap. Each of these took 1 stitch and I don't think will be a big deal once they finish healing.
The last scar I have is a 2 inch incision on the front of my shinbone. I think the method they used to close it was pretty cool. The stitching was done on the inside only, and the skin was taped closed with steri-strips, so I had the end of a suture poking out of the top of the incision and the other end poking out the bottom of it. When they removed it, they just grabbed one end and pulled it out, kind of like you would pull out a splinter. It was explained to me as similar to tying your shoes...if that makes any sense...
From talking to my physical therapist they sometimes can do this to reduce scarring. He also said that he's known people who have had plastic surgeons do their sutures to minimize scarring.
I've been using Mederma, cocoa butter and Neosporin Scar Solution coverings on the scars and at 4 weeks they are really looking good. Nothing more than thin purple lines. They won't be "frankensteinish" at all!
From what I gather the keys to minimizing scars are keeping them moisturized and out of the sun for a year. I liked the option of the Scar Solution things because they not only keep them covered and out of sight, but also keep them out of the sun and seem to keep them moisturized and happy.
I agree with footster - really work to appreciate yourself for who you are - scars and all. With time they will fade, and what is still visible will be a conversation piece - just like chicks dig scars, guys dig scars, too!!
