No reasonable doctor would encourage or permit a kid to go back to football, knowing that the ACL is out. We have all seen far too many new injuries to the articular surface and meniscus, many unrepairable, resulting from second and third giving way episodes.
Look at the NFL. Do you regularly see guys going back to playing before the ACL is reconstructed? The answer is no.
