Why do you need surgery ? Is it because of arthritis or did you somehow reinjure your knee (ie. suffered a tear in the cartilage) ?
If you have a tear and it has to be cut out, doing nothing will certainly cause addl discomfort, irritation to the internals and further deterioration and so surgery will hasten or eliminate further discomfort. Arthritis is generally influenced by genetics. If older family members suffer from arthritis, then an injury or surgery is likely to increase risk of arthritis but if the surgery is needed at this time, it is still going to be beneficial reducing internal degradation due to current deficiency. If there is no or little arthritis concerns genetically, then chances are you will be okay in the future.
I had a cartilage tear cut out eons ago and then 8 years later...I guess about 10-11 years ago, I had addl cartilage cut out and an ACL reconstruction. Bioth injuries were caused by basketball. My knee is perfect, seems like the other one and I have no arthritis issues. I'm now 60 1/2 yrs old.
