In Response To: Help - Complex knee injury (Tom Clift)

Hi,

Approx. 4 weeks ago I was playing volleyball at the local gym and dove for a ball hitting my left knee on the hardwood floor. I had some discomfort, but nothing I considered serious. As the weeks progressed it became more difficult to get out of bed and stand to walk or even sitting in a chair and trying to get up was very painful. At different times it felt like my knee was going to give out from in under me. The pain continued to increase with sweeling and tightness in my calf and down my leg to just above my ankle. I was seen 1 1/2 weeks ago by my family doctor who requested an x-ray at that time. The x-ray showed everything to be normal, but to be sure an MRI was scheduled for last Thursday 2-4-10. I just recieved the results of the MRI today and they are as follows:

1) Complex tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus predominately involving the undersurface.

2) Evidence of a ruptured large Baker's cyst.

3) Grade 3 sprain of the medial collateral ligament with a large amount of fluid on both sides of this structure.

4) Focal fluid collection in the anterior subcutaneous soft tissue immediately anterior to the patella possibly realted to bursa.

5) Mild to moderate thinning of the medial compartment cartilaginous surfaces.

How serious is all of this? What am I looking at as far as repair?...surgery?...arthoscopic?...rehab time?...braces and/or crutches? I'd just like to know what I'm looking at here or if any of this will not even be needed!

Thank you!!
