In Response To: What happened to this site? (Rubyroo)
A few of the old regulars are still lurking in the background, checking in here occasionally. I am sure what Michael has indicated is true.
In my case and I am sure same is true for some of those corresponding frequently a few years back, our time with going thru this ordeal was many, many years ago and we have moved on. Being addicted to this Board was the case even many years since my ACL reconstruction...now...ran out of fingers to count that far back...over 11 years ago. What kept me going was not only the sharing of experiences, aiding others seeking info but also the fun we use to have on this Board. It was really fun even though many come to this Board at least initially with gloom and doom. There were a number of factors that I believe turned some away besides Google/web-metrics. For one thing and I will consider it more minor, this Board was always the common person's Board and while there have been a doctor or two that have stopped by to assist, they never stayed for long. Sue Westin has been a fabulous supporter thru the years but a few years ago, a regular doctor came on board to stay and while no doubt very helpful to those that were seeking answers to issues, I feel that this presence also turned some away that may have felt stifled by not being able to share their responses as freely in the past without being contradicted, etc. This is at least my thought as one contributor to some leaving the Board. I think if one were to also do metrics as to how many were on the Board in prior times, the numbers definitely tailed off since that time. I have to say, I was also initially taken back by what I perceived a stifling of providing responses while a professional was so prolific in responding....but I believe I got passed that period...felt overall the comments were beneficial and accepted it. Maybe I am the only one that perceived this fallout of Board postings but believe this is/was a factor.
Another factor and believe a definite contributor to the deterioration of this Board has been the prolific number of spammers that have nothing better to do than be annoying and get in the way of a helpful and fun Board to correspond on. What is one to think when sometimes accessing this website and seeing the first 10 or more postings all spammers ! This was not the case in the early years of this Board. I am sure that the prolific ability to spam has increased thru the years but so has many Bulletin Boards having the resources (funds) to address/stifle the majority of spammers getting thru and wrecking havoc on this Board. It is great that this Board exists but it probably does not have the resources/advertisers/supporters that can keep these spammers at bay.
I provided the above in response to your question. Not something I have ever harped on. I sometimes stop by now and then to visit and stay for awhile. I like the Board and all that contribute to it. I think the award for longest regular is going to have to go to Michael. he has been the not only a valuable supporter all these years, developed andmaintains the "Library" but has also helped out the Host in working out some of the kinks in the Bulletin Board. While I have never met Michael and i have mostly left this Board, I feel like he's been a friend all these years.
My hope is that the Board will come back to full force with a new batch of regulars that will hang in there and help motivate dialogue. I believe the success of it is not only in the giving of expert advice, it is in the common link that some form with each other thru dialogue, the fun that can exist even though dealing thru this ordeal and then hanging in here to share and assist with others seeking info as others assidted in your need. The thing is that thru all of this, what I most remember is the fun times sharing experiences with others. Now doesn't that sound crazy...on a ACL Board of all places ?
