In Response To: Re-Tear of Reconstructed ACL after 10 years of Post Surgery (Raz K)
Hi, I'm also a competative soccer player. I just turned 40 and had my second acl surgery 7weeks ago. The difference is that my second surgery was on my other knee not my original constructed knee (which was done 11 yrs ago). I tore mine similar to how you did yours. Just note I'm no docotr or physiotherapists so always get their advice.
In general my post-op is better this time that last time. I guess it depends if there are any issues from your surgery or not. I had patella done the first time and hamstring this time. The hamstring was really sore and popped on my a number of times. It's good now though. Just watch that out.
I know that if you have same knee done twice they can't really do it a third time. If you tear it again, you may not be able to fix it a third time. With soccer, you are always at risk of that. Remember, it takes a good year for the ligament to fully heal inside regardless of your muscle strength. The ligament just doesn't gain it's strength until 1yr-1.5yrs. You have to thing about that before jumping on the field too early.
As for the graft choice I would go with hamstring. I wouldn't touch your other knee as you would now effect that knee that doesn't have any problems. I have friends who used the hamstring for the second graft and they are doing well. You just have to wait and trust me I understand you want to get back out there but it's not worth a second tear. If you're not getting paid big buck I think you'll want to walk when your 50.
If you can, have the surgery as fast as possible and this way you can be ready for next summer - don't rush.
