ACL Reconstruction - 7 years on Arthritis

This site was a great help when I had my ACL recon (hamstring); I'm back for some advice.
Injured 43, now 50. Operated straight away after skiing accident. No other damage, other than ACL sever. The knee has been great over-all, a few little niggles. Plenty of PT and strength exercise over ensuing time.
Then 3 months ago, after surfing, knee swelled up; HUGE. Went to OS. Couldn't find anything, said ACL still nice and tight. All ligaments and meniscus all OK. Had MRI, and showed 'a lot of arthritis under knee cap'. Show MRI to original surgeon, said same thing. Went skiing after this, and found it difficult due to some pain in bending movements.
Now back in PT, trying to strengthen muscles and deal with inflammation pain. Taking fish oil caps and Glucosamine / Clord. / MSM supplements.
QUESTION: Is this pain now forever? Will knee strengthening get me back skiing pain free? Any other ways to eliminate arthritic pain?
Cheers, David
