Avulsion Fractures at Ligament Origin and Insertion Points
Avulsion fractions entail a ligament being pulled off from where it attaches to the bone, thus taking a small chip of bone with it. This type of injury is essentially just another way to tear a ligament. If this type of injury involves the ACL or PCL and is severe enough to engender instability of the knee, then standard tendon-graft-type reconstructive surgery is usually recommended. Please see General Knee-Injury Epidemiology and Prevention, Knee-Injury Diagnostics, as well as the various sections dedicated to the different types of grafts (Choosing a Knee-Ligament Graft, ACL Reconstructions via Patellar Tendon Autografts, ACL Reconstructions via Soft-Tissue (e.g. Hamstring) Autografts, ACL Reconstructions via Allografts, PCL Injuries and Reconstructive Surgeries).
