UniSpacer Arthroplasty of the Knee, Domenick J. Sisto et al.; Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American), August 2005, Volume 87, pages 1706-1711. Comments: This study shows that the Centerpulse UniSpacer (formerly the Sulzer UniSpacer), a metal dish-shaped object which is designed to be placed between the tibial plateau and the femoral condyle of a unicompartmentally-osteoarthritic knee, is a fundamentally flawed concept. None of the patients had excellent results at 26 months post-installation. A substantial number of the UniSpacers actually came out of place! For an overview of the options available to people with unicompartmental and bicompartmental knee osteoarthritis, see the July 2005 article What's New in Adult Reconstructive Knee Surgery, by Archibeck et al., in the Total Knee Replacement/Arthroplasty (TKR/TKA) Subsection. Unicompartmental Arthritis of the Knee (Current Concepts Review), Richard Iorio et al.; Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American), July 2003, Volume 85, pages 1351-1364. Comments: This comprehensive and superbly written overview of unicompartmental-osteoathritis treatments is full of wisdom and helpful nuggets of information. It provides interesting insight into non-surgical treatments such as weight loss, Synvisc/Neovisc (hyaluronic acid or hyaluronan) injections, cortisone injections, and osteoarthritis-type sideways-forcing braces.
